Practising without a piano

12/31/2016

I once saw in a drama a girl who had to practice piano on a keyboard drawn out on a piece of cloth and now I read about a man in prison who taught himself piano from books and practising on a cardboard keyboard. It is amazing to read about such determination. I do not think I can do this. Absolutely full of respect for this man.

Adult learners

I once had an adult piano student who went from zero to grade 3 and Alfred adult piano book level 3. She has unfortunately stopped learning when she moved to another town for work. The other adults who came my way did not go past Alfred Book 1. Now I am left with just one adult student, whom I hope will have the will to go as far as she could.

Here's an article about adults taking up musical instrument.

Is my child ready for piano lessons?

3/19/2014

Ideal age for starting piano lesson is 5yo, but I've had students who started as young as 4.

They are ready if you answer YES to all these questions:

  1. Is your child interested in playing the piano?
  2. Can you afford to pay for a piano (from £1600 for digital, from £2600 for acoustic upright),  adjustable bench (from £60) and metronome (from £20)?
  3. Can you commit 15 minutes or more to accompany your child with daily practice at home (until your child is 8 years old)?
  4. Can you commit to pay for weekly lesson that could cost from £26-£35 per hour, foot bills for books up to £30 a year and pay for examination (more than £50 a year)?
  5. Can you child read and recite ABCDEFG (the 7 letter names used in music)?
  6. Can you child count and do simple addition and subtraction (2+2=4, 4-1=3, etc)?
  7. Can your child write (related to fine motor skill required for piano playing)?
  8. Will your child be able to sit and focus for at least 45 minutes?
